After 25 plus years as a partner in law firms and in law firm management, John established his own consultancy, John Chisholm Consulting, in 2005 to share his expertise and experience with individuals and organisations looking to maximise their personal and business performance in order to become firms of the future rather than firms of the past.
Whilst John understands how professional firms operate he is continually challenging firms and the professions generally to look at better ways of doing things, investigate new business models and be more innovative.
Examples of this are John’s leading advocacy to move all professional firms away from pricing their services solely by time, to treat their people as knowledge workers by empowering them rather than controlling them, and to eradicate the outdated and obsolete partnership model.
Professional firms today are facing a variety of challenges many of which they have not faced before including: uncertain economic times, intensified competition in stagnant or decreasing markets, clients more demanding on service and more aggressive on price, more & more traditionally profitable areas now viewed as commodity services, reducing margins & profit levels for many, external disruptors in the marketplace, difficulties in securing and retaining our best people, succession issues, new technologies and an inability to incorporate new services into a coherent business strategy.
There are opportunities arising from all of these challenges but this requires a complete mindset and business model change. The traditional professional firm business model, which operates by leveraging people and hours is outdated and collapsing if not broken. There is a much better business model, offering bold, proven strategies for restoring vitality and dynamism to professional firms of all sizes and which is now being used by 1000’s of professionals all over the world.
A practice can be run more effectively when it becomes a knowledge firm rather than merely a product or service firm.
Creating such a firm is not for everyone as it requires leaders to think differently than they have in the past about why, how and what they do, but if you are one of those professionals who would like to learn more about a business model that has incredible benefits for you, your team and your clients we are more than happy to talk to you, just email me or give me a ring.
